PORT WELSHPOOL (CORNER INLET)
SNAPPER SNAPPER SNAPPER!!! and Squid!. Confirmed snapper catches inside Port Welshpool this week. See below. Squid galore, heaps of squid got caught this week and we are seeing those big ones now not just the smaller 20cm hood ones. There have been calamari with hoods of 43cm caught this week (MASSIVE), that’s Westernport style calamari right there! Offshore has been insane once again, i cant believe the run of windless days offshore for the weekends, perfect timing for the weekend fisherman, not so good for my Tuesdays lol. Anyways…. Heaps of flathead like last week. Plenty up to 50cm. Alot more anglers targeted the reefs for pinkies as well. Modest numbers of 30cm plus pinkies and morwong. Tonnes of gurnard as well, and plenty of barracuda still as well.
Angus Hourigan caught 7 calamari on Sunday 13 September. Port Welshpool. I used an Orange colored Yamashita Live Squid Jig. Best day on the squid i’ve ever had.
Tried for gummies on tide change near Rabbit Island but not a touch. Just a few crabs, too cold still, but tried anyway. Cheer
Thanks for the photo James, Mate what a feed there, some of the those calamari are crackers, looks like the big ones are here now. Time to get the Yamashitas then. Thanks for the report bud.
Hey Will, I got this 320mm squid at Welshpool on the weekend for our Thorpdale & District Angling Club Annual Squid comp and Col Ware, one of our members, won with a 430mm thats just measuring the hood.
WOW…430mmm. That’s a massive squid mate. That’s awesome. Thanks heaps mate. See any other fish around?
Yep i had 2 big runs on snapper one was on my whiting rod had it up to the boat but lost it trying to net it on my own, it was about 5-6kg and had a bigger one take one of my big rods smoking me but bit through the leader…. was devastated! Caught a few whiting and some just legal size flathead. I got it all on the GoPro, i’ll send the vids through for you to check out.
Mate, that’s crazy stuff… You are getting pretty good at these early season snapper. I actually yelled out NOOOOO when it broke you off while i was watching the vid. Great effort though and especially to hook 2 snapper in Welshpool this early in the season. It shows, you cant catch them if you don’t try. Top effort, well done and thanks again for the reports.
Dave Johnson from the Thorpdale & District Angling Club shown here hooked up to a 5-6kg snapper. Unfortunately fishing by himself, he lost the fish getting it into the net. That is a top effort for this early in the season. 20th Sep. Top effort mate and bad luck.
Fished Welshpool on Saturday, pretty quiet. Mixed bag of gurnard, wrasse, flatties, coota and a swell shark, got onto a couple of pinkies out near the island at 35-36cm pan size.
Was a nice day on the water anyway.
Hey Pete, sounds like a good day to me mate, great news to here you caught pinkies in the cold water temp out wide, you’d have to think they are there all year then. Nice work mate thanks for the report.
Hey Will, mint flat calm day outside Port Welshpool again. Smashed the flatties this week as well in 30 plus meters again. Good season. Little Jacko got a draughtboard as well, there was a few around but no where near as many as we normally catch this time of year which is good. Plenty of flatties and Coutta!!
Awesome mate, you and jackie boy are smashing em. Keep it up, i’m coming round for a feed of flatties.
Fished Port Albert Sunday 20/09/15, very slow morning couldn’t win a trick early. Fished all the way around Sunday island. Undersize flathead and as many sand crabs as you could think of.
Waited for an hour before low tide and went and pumped bass yabbies. We parked up away from the mob of boats and got onto a patch of whiting on the run in, left them biting.
Thats a feed and half mate, well done. Thats a top effort on a tough day, Gotta be happy with that. keep it up mate and thanks heaps for the reports. Cheers
We headed out at Port Albert on Sunday 13th for the day. Unbelievable weather with the flattest bar crossing I can remember.
We were targeting some Gummy, but had no luck with them all day across various depths out to 40m in a range of temperatures.
We easily threw back over 40 Gurnard for the day, all quite large size, but like everyone else just had to settle for the flathead.
Ended up with an esky load ranging from 35cm-55cm with no small ones caught all day.
Lost some rigs to the Barracouta and even did some dolphin watching. A great day to be on the water.
Thanks for the report max, thats a great catch, top effort catching big flathead like that offshore. What a place we live in. Thanks again and keep up the report. Cheers
Peter Ruff caught this nice feed at Port Albert on the weekend. He fished the basket beacon with pippis and squid and decided to cast out a squid jig while he waited and he got the calamari on the first cast. Always the way. Good stuff mate.
Hi Will, My wife and I fished Port Albert on Sunday for about 2 hours, and caught these Garfish. The weather was great and these mini marlin were giving us some curry and causing us to have a great day. Cheers Barry
Hey Baz, thanks for the photo and report mate, great to see the big garries in, i’m gonna have to come over and try and get a few. thanks again

Hi Will, Caught these salmon at Mann’s on the weekend. Kept a the couple for a feed and the rest om freezing up for shark and snapper baits this season. Caught this Flathead underneath the school, was a surprise. Andrew Schmidt
G day Andrew, they would have been fun, i have to get down there for a shot. yeah they will make great baits, especially if you salt a few down as well, they last ages then and stay on the hook really well. Great eating fresh i think as well bled and with the red meat and blood lines cut out. Thanks for the report. cheers
90 MILE BEACH
Hey Will, went for a short trip with the kids yesterday 14th sep down to woodside Only fished about an hour and got a nice Flathead and salmon on blue bait. Pictured is Zach and Hannah. All the best, Batezy.
Gday bud, Top effort during the day and the Flathead a bit of a surprise for this early in season. Normally another month till we start seeing blue spot Flathead of the surf but with that unseasonably hot weather on that weekend its not surprising. Top job.
90 MILE BEACH
Something Different: A customer found this at then honeysuckles on the 90 mile beach while he was fishing. He thought it was interesting so rang up the Melbourne Museum and had it authenticated as a 15 million year old fossil called a “Sand Dollar” Apparently like an ancient type starfish sort of thing that slid over the sand bottom eating everything with those the teeth you can see underneath. Pretty Cool!
Hey dude, awesome news, how good is it the creek is producing trout again, hopefully it stays that way unlike the last 3 years. We will have another 2000 bass put in there this December so it will be interesting to show high up they go. Cheers
Hey guys, took the kids for a bit of a crayfish up the creek, they all had eggs so good too see. We put them back obviously as is the regulation. Rememeber…minimum size is 9cm carapaces length and you can only take 1 over 12cm and none with eggs. We caught some eels as well, great pass time for the kids on a sunday arvo when your bored and its too late to take the boat out. Cheers
The Morley’s had a weekend and half up at Dartmouth Lake. They caught all there trout on pink Tassie devils and yellow winged tassie devils and any color with black or orange on them. Italian point fished the best. between our whole group over 30 brown trout were landed for the couple of days.
PORT PHILLIP BAY
Mo landed these thumping big snapper in Port Phillip Bay this week. 1 was 6.5kg and the other was 5.5kg. He said they are going really good until the sun comes up. Hes catching them every trip now.
